Bob Parker: 'President Reagan Shot Assassination Attempt'

Source:Bob Parker- CNN anchors Daniel Shorr and Bernard Shaw.

"Network coverage of President Ronald Reagan being shot March 30, 1981. Part 3 of 11."

From Bob Parker

"On March 30, 1981, United States president Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. in Washington, D.C. as he was returning to his limousine after a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton. Hinckley believed the attack would impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had developed an erotomanic obsession.

Reagan was seriously wounded by a .22 Long Rifle bullet that ricocheted off the side of the presidential limousine and hit him in the left underarm, breaking a rib, puncturing a lung, and causing serious internal bleeding. He was close to death upon arrival at George Washington University Hospital but was stabilized in the emergency room, then underwent emergency exploratory surgery.[5] He recovered and was released from the hospital on April 11. No formal invocation of sections #3 or #4 of the Constitution's 25th amendment (concerning the vice president assuming the president's powers and duties) took place, though Secretary of State Alexander Haig stated that he was "in control here" at the White House until Vice President George H. W. Bush returned to Washington from Fort Worth, Texas.

White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and DC police officer Thomas Delahanty were also wounded. All three survived, but Brady had brain damage and was permanently disabled. His death in 2014 was considered a homicide because it was ultimately caused by his injury.[2][6]

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity on charges of attempting to assassinate the president. He remained confined to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, a DC psychiatric facility. In January 2015, federal prosecutors announced that they would not charge Hinckley with Brady's death, despite the medical examiner's classification of his death as a homicide.[7] Hinckley was released from institutional psychiatric care on September 10, 2016."

From Wikipedia

A very scary time for the country, someone coming close to assassinating the President of the United States. I don't think this is a great time for network news in America, because at first you have them saying that President Reagan wasn't shot at all and not hurt. And it took them a few hours to figure out that he was shot, but not badly hurt and that his life wasn't in jeopardy. And then you get to his surgery, where we finally find out that he was actually close to death in the operating room. This might not be the network news divisions complete fault. They may have gotten some bad information from The White House that was in chaos. But this is not a story where anyone looks good reporting on it.

Vinicius Vieira: 'Rescue Me Theme Song- C'Mon C'Mon'

Source:Vinicius Vieira- Denis Leary's Rescue me.
"Theme song opening : C'mon C'mon by The Von Bondies
No copyright infringement intended.

I leave here in this video, my admiration and homage to the people of New York that the last decade had to live with the ghosts left by September 11, all families with their psychological dilemmas wreckage left by the tragedy, these families and lives destroyed by the infamous terrorist attack, they cited very well portrayed in the series Rescue me to them I leave here all my affection, empathy and respect...

From Vinicius Vieira

I’ve only watched a handful of episodes of Rescue Me which came out less than three years after 9/11 in I believe the summer of 2004. Denis Leary and his partners wanted a show about the New York City Fire and Rescue Squad as a tribute to the New York heroes that rescued a lot of people during 9/11. And that is really about what this show is about the NYC fireman and the life that he lives and the job that he has. As well as several other characters on the show.

Not that Rescue is a bad show, but I believe the thing that sticks out about it is the theme song from The Von Bondies. C’Mon C’Mon which I first heard in a movie theater the same summer that Rescue Me came out. And the theme song and the whole intro of the show the credits and everything will at least get me to see the first scene of the show. Because it really gets me going and wanting to see more.

ABC Sports: NFL 1987- New England Patriots @ New York Jets: Full Game

Source:Classic Pats Games- one of the oldest divisional rivalries in the AFL/AFC.

"This Monday night game is the final game before the player strike.  It's interesting, perhaps moreso than the game itself, to listen to them talk about the labor situation.  Jim Kelly was the highest paid player at the time, making around 1.5 million.

Week 3 would be cancelled and Weeks 4-6 would be played by replacement players and picket line crossers."

One of the best rivalries in the AFC, but both the Patriots and Jets were headed downhill at this point. The Patriots wouldn't make it back to the AFC Playoffs until 1994 under head coach Bill Parcells. (Someone that New Yorkers might be familiar with) And the Jets wouldn't return to the playoffs until 1991 with head coach Bruce Coslett. And they were only 8-8 that season.

Raymond Massey: ‘Barry Goldwater 1964 Presidential TV Spot’

Source:Maryland Democrats- actor Raymond Massey endorsing U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater (Republican, Arizona) for President in 1964.

“Barry Goldwater’s got Hollywood firepower in the form of Actor Raymond Massey, who wants us to get out of a meaningless war that’s costing us “a million dollars a day”. Maybe they could “Go Back to the Future” and stop this meaningless war.”

What apparently Raymond Massey wasn’t aware of is that Senator Goldwater was in favor of a full-out war against North Vietnam and doing what it took to win that war and secure that country for the democrats in the South to govern a United Democratic Vietnam.

President Lyndon Johnson was the so-called peace candidate in the 1964 presidential election. Even though President Johnson escalated the Vietnam War by getting America completely involved and in the war and doing a lot of the fighting and supplying the resources to South Vietnam and ourselves to fight and end this war, but after the 1964 election.

The so-called Tet Offensive of 1965 put America not only in this civil war in Vietnam but with a lot of if not most of the responsibility for winning this war. And trying to prevent Vietnam from going communist. Which it did anyway by 1975-76.

Turner Sports: NBA 1985- Western Conference Semifinals Game 5- Portland Blazers @ Los Angeles Lakers: 1st Quarter

Source:Turner Sports- the Blazers vs the Lakers from 1985. Perhaps the best Western Conference rivalry back then.

"1985 NBA Playoffs: Blazers at Lakers, Gm 5 part 1/12 Western Conference Semifinal."

From Lake Ptic

If it wasn't for the Los Angeles Lakers and let's say the Lakers and Portland Blazers were in the separate divisions in the 1980s, I think the 1980s would've been a much better decade for the Blazers. They were in the Western Conference Playoffs a lot in the 1980s, but lost to the Lakers in 83, 85, and 89, in the playoffs during that decade. And they were loaded with talent, especially offensively, with players like Kiki Vandeweigh, Clyde Drexler, Clavin Nat, Kenny Carr, Steve Johnson late in the 1980s. But would lose to either the Dallas Mavericks or Lakers in the Western Conference Playoffs.

CBS Sports: NBA 1985- Western Conference Finals Game 4- Los Angeles Lakers @ Denver Nuggets: 1st Quarter

Source:CBS Sports- covering game 4 of the 1985 NBA Western Conference Finals.

"1985 NBA Playoffs: Lakers at Nuggets, Gm 4 part 1/12. Western Conference Finals."

From Lake Ptic

Two fast breaking high scoring teams. The Los Angeles Lakers were just better defensively and rebounding, and they also had that big three of Kareem, Magic, and Big Game James, that on other team in the NBA could match, except the Boston Celtics.

CBS Sports: NCAA Basketball 1986- Indiana Hoosiers @ Michigan Wolverines: Highlights

Source:CBS Sports- covering the Hoosiers-Wolverines game from 1986.

"Highlights from the final game of the 85/86 season where the basketball team beat Indiana 80-52 for the Big Ten title.  One year before the 3 point line came to college basketball, and the players are wearing the 80's short-shorts."

From Wolverine Historian

One of the best, is not the best Big 10 basketball rivalries, playing for the Big 10 Championship in 1986 and perhaps a number 1 seed in the tournament.

NFL Films: 'The Super Seventies (1980)'

Source:NFL Films- Miami Dolphins QB Bob Griese, versus the Washington Redskins, in Super Bowl 7.

"This video is a telecast, broadcast, and production of NFL Films. I claim no ownership of this material, and do not profit from it in anyway. This video is intended for historical and educational viewing purposes.

Pro Football emerged as America's national pastime in the 1970's. Narrated by John Facenda, this video looks at a decades worth of record breaking performances."

I'm not saying the 1970s in the NFL was perfect because it wasn't, the rules did favor the defense too much, which is why they were changed in 1978. Something like half of the teams in the NFL in 1977 scored under 300 points in a 14 game season. And the leading receiver and I believe rusher in 1977 rushed for under 1000 yards back when that was the standard to judge great running backs.

The new blocking rules in 1978 that allowed blocker to extend their arms in blocking was needed. And we saw fewer QB sacks and bigger running holes as a result because the the DL no longer had an unfair advantage over the OL.

The 1970s was special because it was all about football and real football. The game was tougher and players could play instead of the league going out of its way to protect offensive players as it does now. What should've come from 1978 and should be done now is that neither the offense or defense would have an advantage based on the rules. That the players would be allowed to play and flags won't be thrown unless players have an unfair advantage like holding or pushing someone down who doesn't have the ball or tackling someone before they have the ball. Just let the players play instead.

What todays NFL can learn from the 1970s is that they should allow the players to play and fight for position, as long as they aren't actually fighting. And let games be decided based on who has the tougher and better team. Instead of constantly looking to see how we can get more offense and more advantage for the offense. Because they think that would drive up ratings and revenue for the league but just let the players play. And let the better teams win.

NBC Sports: MLB 1987- Chicago White Sox @ Detroit Tigers: Full Game

Source:NBC Sports- Detroit Tigers catcher Matt Nokes.

"So this was an NBC Game of the Week with the White Sox and Tigers from April 18, 1987. But wait! Our announcers for this one are Jon Miller and Hawk Harrelson? Indeed they are."

From This Is Where You Find Baseball

I had no idea that Jon Miller ever worked for NBC Sports doing anything. I know he worked for the TVS which was a syndicated network in the 1970s, that also had a sports division and he did NASL soccer games there and later I believe Miller worked for ABC Sports as well. At this point Jon Miller was the radio play by play announcer for the Orioles.

I also didn't know that Ken Harrelson called MLB games for NBC Sports either. He was the Chicago White Sox TV announcer at this point. But here Jon Miller and Ken Harrelson are calling this MLB game for NBC.

NBC Sports: NFL 1977- AFC Divisional- Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos: 2nd Quarter

Source:NBC Sports- coverage of the 1977 AFC Divisional between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos.

"This is joined in progress as the Ghost in the Post was an OT game.  This was the biggest game in Denver Bronco's franchise history at the time."

From Classic Sports

If you look at the the two teams, I think even Denver Broncos fans would say (at least under oath and when they're sober) that the Pittsburgh Steelers had a better team than they did, especially offensively, but defensively as well. I mean just look at the two squads, the personal, the QB, the backfields, the receivers, and the careers that these players had.

But the Broncos lived off of mistakes that their opponents made and mistakes that they forced their opponents to make and they took advantage of all of them, at least in 1977. They beat two far and superior teams just to get to the Super Bowl in 1977. They beat the Steelers and in divisional and then later the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship. But then they play Tom Landry and his Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl and the Cowboys were ready for them and dominated them in that Super Bowl.

Zoltan Toth: 'MISL Soccer in Kansas City but no National TV'

Source:Zoltan Toth- a map of some of the MISL.

"Kansas City effected by national media coverage.
What was wrong to fold MISL Soccer even if Kansas City sold out is Lost  ESPN the national tv sport coverage."

For me at least, to be a major sports league in America, you have to be in the major markets and you have to have national sports exposure on TV. If you can't get the broadcast networks to show your league, you at the very least need national cable networks to do that, as well as local television to cover your league.

Then you also need a feeder system to your league like a minor league system where your clubs can draft young players from, but also develop players who are not ready to play in the major league full-time yet.

Then all of your clubs need to be in major sports markets and not just New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Detroit Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, but Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, as well. As well as the good mid-markets where your sport is popular. And in the MISL case, that would be Baltimore, Cleveland, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Kansas City.

What a major sports league needs to have to not just stay in business and be profitable, but be around indefinitely and be in place where you are not worried about which club or clubs is folding or relocating at the end of the season, are things that the MISL has never had for the most part and why they're still a minor sports league in America. Even though they have a great sports that's purposely designed for the American sports fan, with a lot of action, speed, end to end, and great plays, where you can play both great defense and offense and where you need to do both to be champions.

NBC Sports: NFL 1994- Houston Oilers @ Dallas Cowboys: Full Game

Source:NBC Sports- one of the Houston Oilers lineman.

"1994 Week 2 - Houston at Dallas. Houston Oilers (0-1) at Dallas Cowboys (1-0)
September 11, 1994."

From Sports!

You could really argue that 1994 NFL season was the last nail in the coffin for the Houston Oilers. They were 2-14, head coach Jack Pardee gets fired in the middle of the season and after the 94 season, Oilers owner Bud Adams starts looking for a new home for the Oilers and they end up in three years later in Tennessee, first in Memphis and then later in Nashville. And have been the Nashville Titans (as I call the Tennessee Titans) ever since the 1999 NFL season.

Pittsburgh Penguins TV: NHL 1991- Stanley Cup Finals Game 6: Pittsburgh Penguins @ Minnesota North Stars: Highlights

Source:Pittsburgh Penguins TV- The Penguins bench in game 6.

"1991 Stanley Cup Final Game 6 North Stars vs Penguins Goals"

From Liver 04

I'm not a hockey or NHL expert in general, but going into the 1991 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, I think you would have to assume that the Pittsburgh Penguins-Minnesota North Stars matchup was a mismatch and that the Penguins should win this in a sweep. The North Stars only won 27 out of the 82 games that they played and were in 8th seed in what would be called the Western Conference today. The Penguins had all of that firepower on offense led by Mario Lemieux and others, Tom Barasso was their goalie, and Scotty Bowman was their head coach. And yet the North Stars take the Penguins to 6 games.

NBA-TV: NBA 1985- Western Conference Quarterfinal Game 4- Dallas Mavericks @ Portland Blazers: Mark Aguirre Highlights

Source:Utah Jazz Fanatic- Dallas Mavericks forward Mark Aguirre.

"Huge game by Mavericks forward Mark Aguirre, but his effort isn´t enough to win.

In the last minute Audi Norris scored two decisive baskets."

I don't consider Mark Aguirre to be one of the best players of his era. Certainly not one of the best all around players of his era. And not even one of the best all around small forwards of his era. But for about a 5-6 year span in the 1980s, he was one of the best scorers in the NBA, at least at the small forward position.

Mark Aguirre was basically a bigger, stronger, perhaps taller version of a Adrian Dantley. Both players played like big forwards on offense, but weren't big or tall enough to play the power forward and not very good defenders at either the power or small forward position. But during the 1980s, Mark Aguirre could get his points against every other forward in the NBA.

Paul Manoguerra: MISL 1983- MISL Finals Game 5- Baltimore Blast @ San Diego Sockers: Short Video

"1983 MISL Championship Game 5
San Diego Sockers 3, Baltimore Blast 1
Sockers' 2nd goal

The San Diego Sockers were like the Los Angeles Lakers of the MISL during the 1980s. The Blast were close and a serious championship contender in the 1980s and even won a championship. So this was a great matchup of two of the best MISL franchises.

The Celebrated Misterk: NASL 1980- Tampa Bay Rowdies @ San Jose Earthquakes: Short Video

Source:The Celebrated Misterk- a little ruckus between Rowdies and Earthquakes. Aw, so that's why they're called the Rowdies.

"The Tampa Bay Rowdies defeated the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-0 in a North American Soccer League match on July 16,1980 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, California."

From The Celebrated Misterk

The San Jose Earthquakes played on a short, narrow field, at Spartan Stadium, which was an American football stadium for the San Jose Spartans from San Jose University. Which made it a great place to watch soccer because the fans are so close to the game and action. But it presents challenges to for the offensive teams, to go along with the offsides rules which makes no sense in American sports. But the shorter, narrower fields at American stadiums make it harder for the offenses to move the ball. Plus, the field was so dry and beat up when the Earthquakes played in the NASL. They're really needed their own soccer stadium in the NASL and MLS today.
